Cheap flights from Zakinthos Island to Athens

Start booking early for March, which is the cheapest month named for this route, because island departures and holiday weekends can tighten availability. Midweek flights are often easier to price than weekend ones, and November through February is generally calmer than June through August. If your dates are flexible, compare several days in the price calendar rather than fixing the first fare you see.

The route is served by a mix of Greek and European carriers: Sky Express, Olympic Air, Aegean Airlines, Ryanair, Hahn Air Systems, Condor, Eurowings Discover, Eurowings, British Airways and Edelweiss Air. Direct flights exist, but not every fare is nonstop, so check the itinerary before you pay; baggage, seat choice and changes are not included on every ticket type.

Eleftherios Venizelos is Athens' main airport, so the arrival process has several steps; allow time for baggage reclaim and for finding metro, rail or bus connections into central Athens. Taxis are also available, and the best choice depends on luggage, hour of arrival and how far your accommodation is from the centre. Recheck your terminal and arrival level before you choose transport, because the right option can change with the time of day.

• Review passport, visa and health document requirements for Greece before you travel.
• Recheck flight times and airport details close to departure, because schedules on island routes can change.
