Cheap flights from Wroclaw to New York

May is the cheapest month on this route, so if your dates are open, build the trip around it. Spring and early autumn keep fares moderate, while the summer school holidays and the run-up to Christmas push them up, and so does the week of Thanksgiving in the United States. Midweek departures tend to cost less than Friday or Sunday flights, and booking well ahead of a summer or holiday trip leaves you more choice of connections. Polish and American public holidays fill planes in both directions, so check them before you fix your dates.

No carrier here flies non-stop, so every option is a connection. LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cityline, Swiss, Scandinavian Airlines, TAP Portugal, Air Canada, Cityjet and Braathens Regional Aviation are full-service, which usually means one ticket covering the whole journey. Wizz Air is the low-cost name in the list and is worth pricing separately. Putting a low-cost leg and a long-haul leg on two separate tickets can look cheaper, but you carry the risk if the first flight runs late.

You will land at one of three airports: Newark Liberty International in New Jersey, John F Kennedy in Queens, or La Guardia, the smallest and the closest to Manhattan. All three are within reach of the centre by train, bus or taxi, though the run in from Newark and JFK takes longer than from La Guardia. Check which airport your connection actually uses before booking, because a cheap fare into one and a hotel near another costs you time. Traffic into Manhattan is heavy at rush hour, and late-night arrivals leave you with fewer transport options.

Country facts: Wikidata

• Check which airport your ticket lands at, since New York has three and they sit far apart.
• Confirm that your connection is on one ticket, or leave enough time between flights if it is not.
• Look at what the Wizz Air fare includes and compare it with a full-service ticket before deciding.
• Make sure your passport and any US entry documents are valid well before departure.
• Fly in May if your dates are open, and book early for summer or holiday travel.
• Allow for a delay on the first leg, because a missed connection on separate tickets is yours to solve.
