Cheap flights from Warsaw to Dortmund

December is the cheapest month on this route, and the price calendar shows what each month looks like from late summer through the following spring. Summer and the run-up to Christmas are the busiest stretches, so book earlier if you travel then. Midweek departures are generally quieter than Friday evenings and Sunday nights, when weekend traffic peaks. If you are heading to the German Christmas markets or back to Poland for the holidays, the days right around the holidays go first.

Wizz Air, Wizz Air Malta and Pegasus are the low-cost names on this route, with Sun Express also flying it. LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cityline, Austrian, Air Dolomiti and Hahn Air are the full-service carriers. Low-cost tickets usually come as hand baggage only, with checked bags, seat choice and priority boarding sold as extras, while full-service fares often bundle more, though it depends on the fare you pick. Not every airline on the list flies the route nonstop, so check whether a fare is direct or makes a stop before you choose.

You land at Dortmund Airport, the city's only commercial airport, which sits outside the centre rather than in it. The usual ways into town are the shuttle bus and the rail link to the main station, with taxis as the quicker and pricier option. Allow extra time if you land late, since the last connections of the day go early. If you plan to drive, rental desks are at the airport and the motorway network puts the rest of the Ruhr within easy reach.

• Check whether you leave from F. Chopin or Modlin, since Warsaw's two airports are not interchangeable.
• On a low-cost fare, price in a checked bag and seat selection before comparing it with a full-service ticket.
• If you connect on separate tickets, leave a long buffer, because a missed onward flight is on you.
• Take a valid passport or identity card for Germany and check the current entry rules before you fly.
• Book early for December and for the summer and holiday peaks if you want the lower fares.
• Confirm how you will reach central Dortmund if you land on a late evening flight.
