Cheap flights from Warsaw to Balikpapan

March is the cheapest month to fly this route, and the price calendar tends to stay friendly from September through March. That window covers the European autumn and winter, when demand for Indonesia is lower outside the Christmas and New Year rush, and it overlaps the rainy season in Borneo, so pack for showers. Midweek departures usually cost less than weekend ones, and they also mean shorter queues at check-in. Book well ahead for the Christmas period, for Ramadan and Eid travel, and for the European school holidays, when seats on the connecting legs fill up first.

No airline flies Warsaw to Balikpapan non-stop, so every option here is a connecting itinerary. Qatar Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, Finnair, Austrian, Lufthansa Cityline and Helvetic Airways are full-service carriers, which normally means a checked bag and meals are part of the fare. Fly Dubai and Air Baltic work more like low-cost operators, with a basic ticket and extras such as bags and food paid separately. Which hub you connect through decides the total travel time, so compare the full routing rather than the first leg alone.

Balikpapan has a single airport, Sepingan, set just outside the city on the coast, a short drive from the centre. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are the usual way in; agree the fare or book through the app before you get in, as the rank gets busy when several flights land together. Arriving from abroad means immigration and customs before you reach the exit, so allow time for that and keep your onward booking and address to hand. If you continue somewhere else in Indonesia, that is a separate domestic departure from the same airport.

• Decide which Warsaw airport you are leaving from, F. Chopin or Modlin, and check that your ticket matches it.
• Check what baggage is included, especially on a low-cost ticket where only a small cabin bag may be covered.
• If your trip is split across separate tickets, leave a generous gap between flights, because a missed connection is not protected.
• Confirm the entry rules for Indonesia and that your passport has enough validity left for the trip.
• Compare fares across the price calendar before you commit, since March is usually the cheapest month on this route.
• Build in time for the connection itself, as every routing from Warsaw to Balikpapan involves at least one change.
