Cheap flights from Vienna to Katowice

The price calendar on this page runs from September through April, and April comes out cheapest, when spring demand is at its lowest. Winter is the expensive stretch: Christmas and New Year push fares up as people travel home to Poland and Austria, and January stays busy with return traffic. Midweek departures, especially Tuesday and Wednesday, usually cost less than Friday evening or Sunday flights. Book a few weeks ahead for the winter holidays, and earlier if you need a particular connection, since there is no direct flight to fall back on.

None of the airlines on this route are low-cost carriers. You are choosing between full-service and regional names: Austrian and Lufthansa, Air France, Finnair, TAP Portugal, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Cityjet and Braathens Regional Aviation. Every one of them sells a connecting itinerary, so the difference is where you change planes and how long you wait. LOT Polish Airlines is the Polish carrier in the mix, while Lufthansa and Austrian connect you through their own hubs. What is included depends on the fare family you pick, not on the airline, so a light fare may mean hand luggage only. Compare the total, not the headline fare.

You land at Pyrzowice, the airport that serves Katowice. It sits outside the city rather than at its edge, so the transfer into town is part of the trip — buses and shuttle services run from the terminal, and a taxi or pre-booked car takes you door to door. If you land late, check the last connection into Katowice before you commit to the flight. On the Vienna side you leave from Schwechat Intl, which handles the city's traffic. Give yourself room on the return leg too: with no direct flight, a delay on the first leg can cost you the second.

• Confirm that your whole journey is on one ticket, because there are no direct flights and a self-transfer puts the risk on you.
• Check what your fare includes for hold luggage, since the carriers here are full-service and regional airlines with several fare families.
• Make sure your travel document is valid for the entire trip, including the day you fly home.
• Book early for the Christmas and New Year period, when seats between Austria and Poland sell out first.
