When to fly
December brings lower fares on this route while daylight hours shorten at the destination, so afternoon departures may suit some schedules better than others. Flying mid-week often costs less than weekend travel, especially when avoiding school holiday periods in both countries. Booking several weeks ahead typically yields better prices than last-minute arrangements during peak seasons.
Airlines and what to expect
Full-service carriers like Iberia and Air Europa offer connecting flights through their hubs with checked baggage included in most fares. Low-cost options such as Easyjet, Wizz Air Malta and Volotea operate direct services where you pay separately for additional luggage. Regional operators including Binter Canarias provide connections between the Canary Islands and mainland Spain with varying service levels.
Arriving — Madrid
Arriving at Barajas late in the evening means considering transport options to your accommodation rather than just choosing a flight time. The airport sits roughly twenty miles from central Madrid with metro, bus and taxi services running throughout most of the night on weekdays. Weekend schedules may differ slightly, so checking timetables beforehand helps avoid unexpected delays after landing.
