Cheap flights Stockholm to Katowice

Fares on this route dip in November, which is the cheapest month in the data, and the priced months run from September through February. Late autumn and the weeks after New Year are quiet on both ends, while December fills up fast as people fly home for the holidays. Midweek departures on a Tuesday or Wednesday usually cost less than Friday and Sunday flights, when weekend traffic peaks. Book a few weeks ahead for autumn and winter trips, and earlier if you want to travel around Christmas or the New Year.

No airline flies Stockholm to Katowice nonstop, so every itinerary includes a connection, and where you change planes depends on the carrier you pick. LOT Polish Airlines and Finnair are frequent names on this route, alongside Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Austrian, Croatia Airlines, TAP Portugal and Turkish Airlines. Eurowings is the low-cost option in the mix. Full-service carriers usually include a checked bag in the higher fare families, while the low-cost ticket and the lightest booking classes charge for luggage separately, so read what each fare covers before you compare totals.

Every flight lands at Pyrzowice, the airport that carries Katowice's name but sits well outside the city, in the countryside to the north. It serves the whole Silesian conurbation, so Katowice, Gliwice and Sosnowiec all lie within reach once you are on the ground. Airport buses and shuttle services run between the terminal and Katowice's centre, and taxis wait outside arrivals. If you land late, check the timetable before you book the flight, because evening services thin out and the terminal gets quiet.

• Decide between Arlanda and Skavsta before you search, because Stockholm's two airports sit on opposite sides of the city.
• Check whether your fare includes a checked bag, since low-cost tickets on this route often sell luggage as an extra.
• If your connection is on a separate ticket, leave a generous gap so a delay does not cost you the onward flight.
• Carry a valid passport or identity card for Poland and check the entry rules for your nationality before booking.
• Compare November with the weeks around Christmas on the price calendar before you commit to dates.
