Cheap flights from Shanghai to Madrid

Demand on this route tends to rise around school holidays, Christmas and Spain's summer, so flexible travellers should compare dates outside those periods. November is named as the cheapest month for this route, and dated fares are shown for every month from October to September; if your dates are fixed, check adjacent weeks in the price calendar before booking.

What the fare includes and where extras appear matters first: some tickets bundle checked baggage, meals and seat selection, while other fare families charge for those items during booking or at the airport. The carriers listed are Etihad Airways, Cathay Pacific, Sichuan Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Swiss; none flies non-stop on this route, so compare connection times and fare rules together.

Arrange onward transport and terminal details before you land, because Barajas has more than one terminal and your route into central Madrid can depend on where you arrive. Barajas is Madrid's airport and sits outside the city centre; travellers usually reach central Madrid by metro, train, bus or taxi, with the best choice depending on terminal, time of day and luggage. Watch for terminal changes, long walks between gates and the extra time needed if you are connecting onward the same day.

• Check which Shanghai airport your ticket names, because Pudong International and Hongqiao International are different departure points with different ground access.
• Compare baggage and meal inclusions before paying, since fare families rather than route names determine what is covered.
• Recheck connection times and terminals if your itinerary is built from separate tickets.
• Confirm passport and any visa requirements for Spain before you book, since rules depend on nationality.
• Use November as your first comparison point if dates are flexible, then check nearby months in the price calendar.
