Cheap flights from Montreal to Krakow

Fares on this route dip in October, the cheapest month in the calendar, and the months on either side of it, September and November, stay close behind. Summer is the busy stretch: July departures from Montreal to Krakow cost more because school holidays line up at both ends. December fills up with Christmas traffic, and Poland's long weekends in May sell out early. Midweek departures, Tuesday and Wednesday in particular, usually undercut weekend ones. Book a few months ahead for autumn travel, and start looking in spring if you want to fly in summer.

No airline flies Montreal to Krakow nonstop, so every itinerary includes at least one connection. Air Canada, Lufthansa, Swiss, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, British Airways, American Airlines and TAP Portugal are full-service carriers, and their routes usually pass through a hub in Canada or Europe before landing at Balice. Air Transat, WestJet and Edelweiss Air sit at the leisure end of the list, often with seasonal schedules and lighter fares. What differs most is what comes with the ticket: compare a checked bag, seat selection and meals across the options, because the headline fare rarely covers the same things on every airline.

You land at Balice, Krakow's only passenger airport, on the western edge of the city. The centre is a short ride away, by taxi, ride-hailing app, or the airport train and bus services that link the terminal to the main station. Late arrivals are the thing to watch: the last trains and buses of the day leave well before the airport goes quiet, so check the timetable against your landing time. If your connection puts you in a different Polish city first, the onward trip to Krakow is a long one, so confirm the arrival airport before you pay.

• Check what your fare includes, since a checked bag is not always part of the ticket on this route.
• If your connection is booked on a separate ticket, leave a generous buffer for delays.
• Make sure your passport and any visa or entry document for Poland are in order before you pay.
• Compare September, October and November departures, because October is the cheapest month and the shoulder months stay close.
• Decide whether midweek works for you, as weekend departures usually cost more.
