Cheap flights from Manchester to Verona

The school holidays and the destination's summer push fares up first, so that is the stretch to book early or avoid. Work back from there and November comes out as the cheapest month on this route, with the shoulder months around it usually gentler on the wallet than the peak. The price calendar covers October through September, so you can see how each month sits before you commit to dates.

Start with what the ticket includes: on Ryanair, Ryanair UK, Easyjet and Jet2 the base fare covers little beyond a small cabin bag, and checked luggage or seat selection appear as extras. TUI Airways works more like a package airline, with baggage allowances bundled differently. Aer Lingus and Emerald Airlines, Loganair Limited, Vueling Airlines and Royal Air Maroc route you with a connection, which adds time but can lower the fare on dates when the nonstop flights are full.

Sort out your transfer before you land: Verona airport sits a short distance outside the city, and the usual ways into town are the shuttle bus and a taxi rank that meets each arrival. Give some thought to your first hours — if you land in the evening, confirm your hotel's check-in and how late the bus runs. The terminal is compact, so picking up bags and getting outside takes little time.

• Check whether a connecting option means two separate tickets and who rebooks you if the first leg is late.
• Compare baggage rules on Ryanair and Easyjet against the fare difference before assuming the cheap ticket is cheap.
• Check that the departure is from Manchester International, the only airport serving the city.
• Confirm your passport and any entry requirements for Italy are in order before you pay.
• Look at the price calendar across the October to September span rather than a single date.
