Cheap flights from London to Varna

January is the cheapest month to fly this route, and it stays quiet once the New Year travel rush is over. Summer, from June through August, is when demand peaks and fares follow, so book those months well ahead. Spring and autumn sit in between and suit anyone who would rather not travel in peak season. Midweek departures are usually kinder to your budget than Friday or Sunday flights. Watch UK school holidays and Bulgarian public holidays, when seats on the direct flights fill up early.

Wizz Air, Wizz Air UK and Wizz Air Malta carry a large share of this route, alongside Ryanair, Easyjet and Vueling Airlines. TUI Airways flies it too, often with holiday packages behind the seats. These are low-cost carriers, so expect to pay separately for anything beyond a basic seat, such as checked baggage or a chosen seat. Austrian, Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines sell the same journey as full-service itineraries, which usually means a connection rather than a direct flight and a fare that bundles more in. Compare the total cost, not the headline fare.

Varna Airport is the only airport serving the city, so there is no second terminal to choose between at the far end. It sits outside the city, a short ride from the centre. The usual ways in are the local bus, a taxi from the rank outside arrivals, or a transfer booked in advance. In summer the rank gets busy and queues build, so agree your destination before you set off. If you land late at night, have your onward plan settled before you fly. Hiring a car at the airport is the easy option if you want to see more of Bulgaria than the city itself.
