Cheap flights from London to Medan

February is the cheapest month on this route, so start there if your dates can move. The price calendar covers September through April, which means the fares you can compare run from early autumn into spring; outside that window nothing is priced yet. Treat the end-of-year holidays and school breaks as the weeks to book first, and check midweek departures against weekend ones before you settle. For winter travel, give yourself a few months of lead time and watch the calendar as new months appear.

Nobody flies London to Medan non-stop, so every option is a connection, and the airline list reflects that. Qatar Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways Intl, Air France, Oman Air, Edelweiss Air, Air Dolomiti and German Airways are full-service carriers; AirAsiaX Sdn Bhd is the low-cost long-haul name among them. Accesrail also shows up in the results. What separates these carriers on this route is the connection itself: where you change planes, how long the layover runs and whether the whole trip sits on one ticket. Check that before you compare fares, because a split booking can cost you more if a leg is delayed.

Medan is served by Kualanamu, the city's single airport, and it sits well outside the centre, so treat the transfer into town as part of the journey rather than an afterthought. You arrive on a connecting ticket, which means your checked bags may or may not travel all the way through, so confirm that at the London check-in desk. At Kualanamu you clear Indonesian immigration and customs, so have your onward address and documents ready. Work out how you are getting to your hotel before you fly, and check what ground transport runs at the hour you land.

• Decide which London airport you are leaving from, because City, Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton and Stansted are not interchangeable on a connection.
• Check whether your bags are through-checked or you collect them and re-check at the connection point.
• If the itinerary is split across two tickets, know what happens when the first leg is late.
• Read the baggage rules on the low-cost leg before you add a suitcase.
• Confirm the entry requirements for Indonesia, including passport validity and any visa you need.
• Book early if your dates fall in the end-of-year holidays or a school break.
