Cheap flights from Krakow to Nouakchott

March is the month with the lowest fares on this route. Prices also show up for September, October, November, December and January, so the autumn and winter months give you room to compare. Summer travel is not in the mix here — if you can move your trip to spring or late autumn, you usually pay less. Flying midweek, Tuesday to Thursday, tends to be quieter and cheaper than a Friday or Sunday departure. School holidays and the weeks around Christmas push fares up in both Poland and Mauritania, so book those early. For the lowest fares, start watching prices a few months ahead and set an alert.

Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Turkish Airlines and LOT Polish Airlines all serve the Krakow to Nouakchott route, and none of them is a low-cost carrier. Every option is a connecting itinerary, normally through the airline's own hub, so the number of stops and the overall journey time differ from one booking to the next. Because these are full-service airlines, a checked bag is usually part of the fare, though the lightest fare families can leave it out, so read the conditions before you pay. Booking both legs on one ticket keeps you covered if a delay makes you miss the connection; two separate tickets leave that risk with you.

Nouakchott is served by a single airport, and it sits close enough to the city that the transfer into the centre is a short drive rather than a journey. Taxis are the usual way in; agree the fare before you get in, since meters are not always used, and have some local currency with you for the ride. Some hotels arrange a pickup if you ask when you book, which is the calmest option if you land late at night. Keep your onward address and the name of your hotel written down for the driver, and check whether your arrival time falls outside normal hours, when the airport is quieter and transport is thinner.

• Confirm your departure airport is Balice, the only one serving Krakow, and that the connection leaves time to change planes.
• Check whether your fare includes a checked bag, since the lightest tickets on full-service airlines often do not.
• If the legs are on separate tickets, plan a longer stop and check whether you must collect and re-check your bag.
• Look up Mauritania's entry rules, including visa and vaccination requirements, and check your passport has plenty of validity left.
• Book early for March, the month with the lowest fares, and compare the autumn and winter months before you commit.
• Compare total travel time, not just the fare, because routings through different hubs vary.
