Cheap flights from Krakow to Alexandria

November is the cheapest month to fly this route, and the reason is demand rather than distance: the Polish autumn break is over and the holiday rush has not started. Fares climb again around Christmas and New Year, and the Egyptian summer months tend to be busier and pricier. Spring and autumn sit in the middle. If your dates are loose, compare midweek departures with weekend ones, and check the price calendar for September, October, December, January, February, April, June and July before you book.

No airline flies Krakow to Alexandria non-stop, so the choice is between low-cost and full-service carriers on a connecting itinerary. Wizz Air Malta and Air Arabia are the low-cost names here; their fares look smallest at first glance, so compare what each one actually includes before you decide. Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cityline, Austrian, Finnair, Air Serbia, Aegean Airlines, Air Dolomiti and Nordic Regional Airlines are the full-service options, and they sell the whole trip as one ticket, which matters when a delay eats into your connection time. Whichever you pick, check the change of plane and the length of the layover, not just the fare.

You land at Borg el Arab, the airport serving Alexandria, and it sits well outside the city, so allow real time for the transfer instead of assuming a quick hop from the terminal. A road transfer is the practical way in, whether that is a taxi, a pre-booked car or a hotel pickup, and it is worth arranging before you fly if you land late. Balice, Krakow's only airport, handles all departures, so there is no second airport to confuse on the way out. Keep a little local currency on you for the first leg of the journey.

• Check that you are flying out of Balice, Krakow's only airport.
• See what a Wizz Air Malta or Air Arabia fare includes for bags and seats before comparing it with a full-service ticket.
• If the trip is built from separate tickets, a missed connection is yours to fix, not the airline's.
• Check your passport validity and Egypt's entry rules before you fly.
• Look at where the layover is and how tight the change is for a checked bag.
• Compare November with the months around it on the price calendar.
