Cheap flights from Katowice to New York

December is the cheapest month on this route, and it is a strange one: Poland goes quiet between the holidays while New York fills up with visitors. Late autumn and the first weeks of the new year are calmer than the summer rush, when Polish families fly out and long school breaks push fares up. Book well ahead for June, July and August, and compare departures across the whole week instead of fixing on a Friday or a Sunday. If your dates are loose, let the price calendar choose the month for you.

No airline flies Katowice to New York non-stop, so every option is a connection, and the carrier you choose decides where you change planes and how much of the trip is bundled into the fare. Wizz Air is the low-cost name on this route, and its fares keep extras separate, so add a bag before you compare it with anything else. LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Dolomiti, United Airlines, Air Canada, Condor, Turkish Airlines, TAP Portugal and Singapore Airlines all sell connecting itineraries through their own hubs, where the fare rules spell out what is included. Look at the layover as closely as the ticket.

New York is served by Newark Liberty International, John F Kennedy and La Guardia, and which one you get depends on the airline and the hub you connect through. Check the arrival airport before you book, because moving between them on the ground can swallow half a day. All of them sit outside Manhattan and are reached by train, bus, taxi or rideshare; Newark and JFK have rail links into the city, while La Guardia is served by bus and road. Leave room for immigration queues on arrival and have your onward address ready.

• Check that you are flying from Pyrzowice, the only airport serving Katowice, so you do not turn up at the wrong place.
• Add the cost of a checked bag to a Wizz Air fare before you compare it with a full-service ticket.
• Look at where the connection sits, because a long layover can turn a cheap ticket into a full day of travel.
• If the legs are sold on separate tickets, you carry the risk of a missed connection yourself.
• Check entry requirements for the United States before you book, and make sure your passport is valid for the trip.
• December is the cheapest month, but the days around Christmas and New Year are the ones to book first.
