Cheap flights from Hannover to Krakow

October is the cheapest month we track for this route, and fares appear from September through February, with a second window in May and June. Late autumn and winter are the calm stretch on the German side, while the late spring months fill up with city-break traffic. Fly midweek if you can, since Tuesday and Wednesday departures are usually the quietest and Friday and Sunday cost more. Watch German and Polish school holidays, plus the Christmas and New Year weeks, when connecting seats sell out early. Book a few weeks ahead for winter travel, and earlier than that if a holiday date is fixed.

The carriers on this route fall into two groups. Sun Express is the low-cost name in the list, while KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and its regional partner KLM Cityhopper, Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines, Swiss, Austrian, Air Dolomiti, Helvetic Airways and HOP! are full-service airlines. There are no direct flights from Hannover to Krakow, so every itinerary changes planes, usually at one of those carriers' home hubs. What you get on board depends on the fare family you choose rather than the airline name, so check the baggage allowance and the length of the connection before you compare totals.

You land at Balice, the airport serving Krakow, which sits a short ride outside the city rather than in the middle of it. A train link and local buses connect the airport with the centre through the day, and taxis and ride-hailing are easy to find at the terminal. If you arrive late, check the time of the last train or bus before you commit, because gaps between services grow after the evening peak. Allow extra time on the way back as well, since security at Balice can be slow on busy weekend mornings. If your trip is split across two tickets, a delay on the first leg is yours to sort out, not the second airline's.

• Carry a passport or national ID card valid for travel to Poland and check the entry rules for your nationality.
• Compare September, October and November, since October is the cheapest month in the fare data.
