Cheap flights from Frankfurt to Katowice

September is the cheapest month on this route, so if your dates can move, aim for early autumn. Summer and the Christmas weeks push fares up at both ends, and winter is quiet apart from the holidays. Midweek departures generally cost less than Friday or Sunday flights, and booking a few weeks ahead beats leaving it late. Watch Polish school holidays and long weekends, when seats to Katowice fill faster than usual.

No airline flies Frankfurt to Katowice nonstop, so every itinerary includes a connection. Wizz Air Malta and Easyjet are the low-cost names in the mix, where the basic fare covers hand baggage and you pay extra for a checked bag or a chosen seat. LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines and Edelweiss Air are full-service carriers, and their tickets usually include a checked bag and something to eat. Buying both legs on a single ticket keeps the whole trip with one airline, which is worth checking when you compare prices.

You land at Pyrzowice, the airport that serves Katowice, and it sits outside the city rather than in it. Buses and shuttles are the usual way into the centre, and a taxi is the door-to-door option if you arrive late. On the Frankfurt side, check which airport your ticket uses, because Frankfurt International and Hahn are separate places and the transfer between them is not one to arrange on the day. Allow time at the other end for baggage and for the ride into town.

Country facts: Wikidata

• Check whether you leave from Frankfurt International or from Hahn, because the two airports are not close together.
• On low-cost tickets, add a checked bag and a seat to the fare before you compare it with a full-service one.
• If your connection is on separate tickets, leave a long buffer, since a missed first leg is your problem, not the next airline's.
• Carry a passport or identity card that is valid for Poland and check the entry rules for your nationality.
• Compare the price calendar across the whole year, since September is the cheapest month but not always the quietest.
