Cheap flights from Dublin to Vienna

When you book matters as much as when you fly. January is the cheapest month on this route, well clear of the summer rush, and fares climb as soon as the Christmas window opens. Late autumn and the first weeks of the new year are quiet, with fewer business travellers on the early departures. Midweek flights, especially Tuesday and Wednesday, undercut the Friday and Sunday runs that weekenders fill. Vienna's Christmas markets push December prices up, and Austrian school holidays do the same in July and August. Book a few months ahead for winter, earlier for summer.

Ryanair and Aer Lingus fly the nonstop runs between Dublin and Vienna, and both sell a bare ticket: Ryanair charges separately for a cabin bag beyond a small personal item and for seat choice, while Aer Lingus bundles a little more but still prices checked luggage on top. Everything else on the route connects. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and its regional arm KLM Cityhopper route you through Amsterdam, Air France through Paris, and Transavia France, Iberia Express, German Airways, APG Airlines and Portug appear on connecting itineraries too. One ticket for a connection usually means your bag is checked through and the airline rebooks you after a delay; separate tickets leave that risk with you.

Vienna has one airport, Schwechat International, and it sits outside the city to the south east, a short ride from the centre rather than a long haul. A dedicated airport train and the commuter rail both run into the middle of town, and buses and taxis cover the same trip. Allow extra time on the way back: the airport is a single terminal complex, so check-in and security queues can be long on Friday evenings and at the start of the Austrian holiday weeks. If you land late, note that train and bus timetables thin out after midnight.
