Cheap flights from Dubai to Najaf

October is the cheapest month on this route, and the price calendar covers September through May, so you can compare before you commit. Fares usually rise in the cooler months, when demand from business and family travellers is highest, and again around major holidays. Midweek departures often cost less than weekend ones. Book a few weeks ahead if you are travelling in a busy period, and stay flexible by a day or so, because the gap between neighbouring dates can be wider than you expect. If your plans are open, start with October and work outwards.

Fly Dubai is the low-cost carrier on this route, while Qatar Airways, Kuwait Airways, Gulf Air, Royal Jordanian, Oman Air and Egyptair are the full-service names you will see. Some flights go non-stop between Dubai and Najaf; others connect through the airline's home hub, which adds time but can lower the fare. On low-cost tickets, checked baggage, seat choice and food are usually extras. Full-service fares more often bundle a bag and a meal and give you more room to change plans, but read the fare rules either way and compare the total, not the headline fare.

You land at Al Najaf International, the airport that serves the city. Immigration and baggage are usually straightforward, but several arrivals can come in close together, so allow time if you have a long road journey ahead. Taxis and pre-booked transfers are the usual ways into town; agree the fare before you set off, or arrange a pickup through your hotel. Have your accommodation address written down for the driver, and keep some local currency on you for the ride. If someone is meeting you, confirm which exit before you fly.

• Confirm your departure point in Dubai, since Dubai International, Al Maktoum International and Dubai Bus Station are not interchangeable.
• On a low-cost ticket, add the checked bag and seat fee to the fare before you decide it is cheaper.
• If your connection is on a separate ticket, leave a long gap, because a missed leg is not protected.
• Check the entry rules and documents for Iraq well before departure.
• Book early for the busy months and weigh October against your own dates.
• Ask your hotel in Najaf to arrange the airport transfer if you land late.
