Cheap flights from Dortmund to Madrid

The costly end of the year comes first: December sits around Christmas and school holidays, and June sits in the summer travel period, so both need early booking; January is the cheapest month in the fare data, with October, November, February and March also priced. Compare midweek and weekend dates on the calendar, and check fares as soon as your plans are fixed, especially for December and June.

The list mixes low-cost and fuller-service carriers, and all of them connect rather than flying direct: Wizz Air Malta, Wizz Air UK, Wizz Air, Easyjet, Eurowings, Sun Express and Pegasus. Compare connection times, terminal changes and whether both legs are on one ticket, and check what each fare includes before you pay.

Arrange your transfer from Barajas before you land, because the airport sits outside central Madrid and late arrivals can mean fewer convenient transport options. Madrid Barajas has several terminals, so check your arrival terminal and the onward metro, train, bus or taxi into the city, and allow extra time if you change terminals.

Country facts: Wikidata

• Check that your booking names Dortmund as the departure airport and Madrid Barajas as the arrival airport.
• Check baggage rules for each carrier, because low-cost fares may charge separately for cabin and hold bags.
• Check whether your connection is on one ticket or separate bookings, and allow enough time between flights.
• Check passport and entry requirements for Spain before you book.
• Check December and June dates early, since holiday and summer travel can tighten availability.
