Cheap flights to Portugal
Cheap flights to Portugal land you in a country that fits several kinds of trip at once. Lisbon is the capital and the busiest gateway, Porto covers the north, Faro opens the southern coast, and the islands — Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Azores gateways Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Horta and Flores Island — need their own flights. Most travellers come for a city break, a beach week or a slow island stay, and the gateway you choose shapes the rest of the trip.

Pick Lisbon for a first visit or a business trip: it is the capital, and it is where most trips to the country begin. Porto suits a shorter city break, with the north and its wine country on the doorstep. Faro is the gateway for southern beach holidays. Madeira and Porto Santo work for a warm island week, while Ponta Delgada, Terceira, Horta and Flores Island are for travellers who want the Azores and don't mind a connection.

When to go
Flights to Portugal are busiest in the peak summer weeks, when school holidays push demand up on every gateway, and again over the winter holidays for Madeira and the Azores. Spring and autumn are calmer — the same routes, more room, lower fares — and the south still works for a beach trip. If your dates fall in high summer, book well ahead: Lisbon and Faro fill first, then the island routes. Outside those windows, midweek departures are usually the easiest to find.
