Cheap flights from Alta to Barcelona

The weeks either side of April can be just as useful, and April itself is the cheapest month on this route. Compare October, November, December, January, February, June and July dates as well, since the calendar does not cover every month. Midweek departures are worth checking against weekend ones, and December and July overlap with Christmas and the Spanish summer, so look earlier for those weeks. Book as soon as the April dates you want appear, and give December and July more lead time.

Start by checking what each fare includes, because baggage, seat choice and meals can be bundled or charged separately on Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian International, Norwegian, Finnair, Wider and Nordic Regional Airlines. There are no direct flights, so every itinerary connects somewhere and the connection airport is shown on each quote; compare total travel time, not just the headline fare. The same carrier can price the same route differently by date, so hold the inclusions fixed when you compare.

Getting into town from Josep Tarradellas Barcelona airport is straightforward by airport bus, train or taxi, and the transfer feels like a normal city airport run rather than a long coach journey. Watch which terminal you arrive at and which exit you use for your onward transport, and keep your booking details handy for the connection. If Barcelona is only a stop on a wider trip, check the terminal before you plan a tight onward link.

• Check the departure and connection airports on your ticket, even though Alta has one airport, because the transfer point can change.
• Check cabin and checked baggage rules for Norwegian, Norwegian International and Wider before you add bags to a low headline fare.
• Check passport, visa and entry requirements for Spain before you book.
• Check April dates against the price calendar, and give December and July bookings more lead time.
• Check whether your ticket is one booking or separate tickets, because that changes who helps if a flight is missed.
